From a strict scientific point of view, our sessions will cover the seismic event from its very source, that is to say from tectonics to its effects on our societies (as described by the sociology of risks). The different components of the response of the Earth’s system to a violent earthquake will also be thoroughly described: propagation of seismic waves in the solid earth, deformation of the Earth’s surface, tsunamis in oceans, infrasonic waves in the atmosphere...

Lesser known applications of seismology will also be discussed and their study will highlight the mutual gain that both industry and science can achieve by working together (eg seismology used as an environmental monitoring technique on red-hot topics such as CO2 sequestration or exploitation of geo-energies).
The ESC 2010 will focus on the Mediterranean dimension of seismology as well as on the study area at the interface between science and society, a field which includes risk management, sociology, educational initiatives such as the Eduseis or Sismo des Ecoles (teaching kids how to use a seismometer) but also the application of Citizen Science in seismology.
Considering the wide range of the subjects to be addressed, a fine balance will be observed between keynote lectures, poster participations, and between the varied sessions themselves, making the ESC programme different from what it was before.
